We lived in Ann Arbor for 23 years and we always had our favorite Thai place. Ever since we moved to Harrison, we’ve been on the search for a place to fill the void :-) Low and behold, Ruk’s was recommended to us and now life is finally good again. A MUST TRY if you like Thai! 15 minutes away and totally worth it.

505 CAFE

ALWAYS A HIT - I mean… it NEVER, EVER disappoints. The food is amazing and it’s only a 15 minute drive. Cafe and event venue on ground level and a speakeasy, yeah, you read that correctly, a speakeasy in the lower level. The pic on this page shows the decor. Very cool place!

The MERRY-HEARTED CIDERY
5740 M-61. Gladwin, MI 48624
Ok…..this is an apple orchard where they brew cider. Like over 20 kinds……and as luck would have it, I LOVE hard cider. It’s about 15 minutes east of Harrison on M-61 - An ABSOLUTE must check out. They have limited hours, so pop over to their site and confirm that they’ll be open. Personal favorite is the Purple Heart

M-55 POUR HOUSE
5309 W. Houghton Lake Dr. Houghton Lake, MI 48629
www.facebook.com/M55PourHouse/
Well, we’ve tried dozens of places which claim they make “the best smash burger” and those places never come close to the burger at the M-55. The M-55 crew has that smasher dialed in like there’s no tomorrow. It’s a 25 minute drive there from the Yellow Door. Well worth the drive….. Yeah, we dead run up there a couple times a month just for that.

BUCCILLI'S
2949 W. Houghton Lake Dr. Houghton Lake, MI 48629
Buccilli’s was referred to us a couple months ago. We understand that Momma Cillie’s in Harrison and Buccilli’s in Houghton Lake had ties at some point and parted ways. Not sure what the dealio was, but I gotta tell ya…Buccilli’s puts out a mean pizza. Worth the drive if you have other things going on up there? Yes. Worth a total dead run like the M-55? No. If you’re up in Houghton Lake and cravin’ pizza, make sure you stop there. It’s a sure bet.

JACK PINE RESTAURANT
231 E. Main. Harrison, MI 48625
The ol’ Jack Pine. A Harrison staple. Yep. It’s the “go to” in Harrison with the locals for comfort food. Good prices. Great service. Solid fare. When we first moved here, I asked several people where to eat in town and an almost unanimous response was the JP. I’m a breakfast guy myself, and the portions are ridiculous. Hardly get through it all. Lynnette pulls the wet burrito 90% of the time. Oh…..their pies! Jenny is the pie queen over there. OMG, they are so good. You gotta get there early though - they sell out quickly! Nothing fancy here. Simple diner…..great food.

PIZZA IN HARRISON
Momma Cillie’s - The Cillie stix are crazy good!
Mr. Veto’s - Those breadsticks! OMG…Ask for extra garlic and butter, too!
Sunrise - Yeah, it’s in the Marathon gas station. Yeah, it’s pretty good! It’s a local favorite. Breadsticks there don’t compare to MC’s or Vetoe’s
If you ask me, I’m hitting Momma Cillies because it’s a mile away and I’m lazy about driving for pizza. Momma Cillie’s deluxe is pretty good. If you ask Lynnette, she’s making the drive out to Veto’s, which is 5 miles east of town. Veto’s supreme pizza is great and those bread sticks are unmatched.

Feelin’ like BBQ?….well, here ya go! They sling it pretty darn good, if I do say so. It’s on the main drag here in town. A little building in the Walraven’s parking lot. Limited hours of operation. Friday-Sunday. Check their Facebook page to make sure they haven’t sold out for the day.
